There may come a point in time where you discover that you are in need of a dental crown–but what are dental crowns, and how can they help you enjoy your smile more comfortably?
A crown is simply a cover or cap that is placed on your tooth to improve its appearance and/or its strength and offers long-term protection. It is virtually undetectable from the other teeth in your mouth, unless you have decided to fill your mouth with teeth of all different colors and sizes!
At Gentle Touch Dentistry, we know that the reasons for needing a crown are many. Perhaps your tooth is:
Whatever the reason is, Dr. Polevoy and his team will help you restore and protect your tooth with the crown that’s right for you.
Different types of materials comprise crowns: ceramics, composite resin, porcelain, metal alloys, or any combination of the four.
Whether your need for a crown is for cosmetic reasons (tired of sticking your tongue in that empty spot) or functional reasons (chewing and drinking without howling in pain), Dr. Polevoy will create one that looks the most natural and provides the most comfortable fit in your mouth for a healthy smile.
The process typically takes two to three visits. At first, any damage or tooth decay is removed, and then we take an impression of the tooth before sending it on to our lab. During this interim period, we will fit you with a temporary crown to bide you over until the final model is ready. Don’t worry, you won’t be walking around toothless! But be warned that you will be temperature sensitive, so go easy on those piping hot espressos and all that ice cream.
On your next visit, we fit your tooth with the final model, and ensure that it fits like a glove so that even you can’t point out which one it is when looking in the mirror.
There may be a need for a third and final visit to make any minor adjustments or tweaks.
You may have lost a tooth (or several teeth) and in this instance, you would need a type of dental restoration known as a bridge. Loss of a tooth has serious consequences: It can result in altering the shape of your face and significantly affects the function of your teeth due to bite and jaw misalignment.
A bridge is an alternative to dentures or dental implants, made up of a removable or fixed dental prosthetic that integrates one or more crowns to replace the teeth (and fill in the gap). Bridge the gap, if you will (and we hope you do!)
With proper care (brushing and flossing twice a day, regular dental checkups), you can expect for your new tooth—or teeth—to last several years.
