Does my insurance cover dental implants?
Does my insurance
(Delta, Metlife, Cigna, Guardian, AETNA, etc)
cover dental implants?
This is a question we hear almost daily. While most dental insurance questions can be answered easily and quickly, this one is more complicated.
Many Westchester employers cover a portion of the dental implant procedure. Our Harrison dental office works with most dental insurance plans to maximize your savings for dental implants.

5 “Tricks” to get your dental insurance to pay for dental implants.
While getting full coverage is usually impossible, sometimes we can get maximum benefit by using these “tricks of the trade.”
#1 – “Double Your Dental Insurance Benefit”
Because the process from tooth to implant can take up to 9 months, doing it over 2 “insurance years” can double your effective coverage. Dental insurance plans have restrictive yearly maximums, typically $1000-2000. There are several procedures that are involved in a dental implant. Spreading the procedures over two insurance years allows you to use both – effectively doubling your insurance benefit.
#2 – “If you don’t pay for an implant – what will you pay for?”
Your dental insurance might not cover implants, but it has to cover something to replace the tooth. If implants are not covered, we can ask it to apply ALTERNATIVE BENEFIT PROVISION.
It means we ask your insurance company to cover an alternative procedure, such as a bridge or a partial denture, that would be a reasonable alternative.
The benefit can often be similar to what they would have paid for an implant.
#3 – “There are multiple procedures that are involved in a dental implant. Which ones are covered?”
As we discuss on this page, there are 5 procedures that are involved in a typical dental implant – tooth extraction, bone graft, the implant itself, the abutment, and the crown. It is very rare that NONE of these procedures are covered. We can usually get significant benefit for most, if not all, of the procedures.
#4 – “Break it down”
Dentists typically “bundle” their services – for example, there are multiple X-rays that are done during the process. These X-rays are typically “bundled” with the procedure and are not charged separately. “Unbundling” them can get you more coverage by getting some reimbursements for a part of the procedure.
#5 – “What are my insurance options?”
Implant coverage is specific to each plan. If your employer offers multiple plans – call each one to find out about coverage of the codes we list in this article. You may be surprised how different the plans are.

Everything he told me would happen went exactly as he said. The procedure was quick and easy and completely painless, and it took exactly as much time as he said. I highly recommend him”
